Lisbon, with its tiled buildings, thriving restaurant scene, and ideal weather all year round, is a city that can be visited at any time. The Bairro Alto Hotel, a member of the Leading Hotels of the World, is a favorite among many due to its central location in Chiado’s landmark square, Praca Luis de Camoes. This hotel, housed in an 18th-century yellow building, is known as the original boutique hotel in Lisbon.
The Bairro Alto Hotel opened its doors in 2005 and remained relatively unnoticed as Lisbon was not yet a popular European destination. However, following a three-year renovation that concluded in 2019, the hotel has maintained its reputation as one of the best centrally located accommodations. The renovation expanded the property by combining four different buildings, resulting in unique rooms.
The hotel offers 65 rooms, each featuring a mix of antique and modern furniture. The rooms are adorned with Portuguese-inspired elements such as local art, glazed tiles, and woven fabrics. Some rooms also have French balconies overlooking the street or central square.
For dining options, the fifth-floor BAHR restaurant is a must-visit. The open kitchen allows guests to watch chefs prepare local dishes with a twist. The restaurant also features a terrace with stunning views and an adjoining bar popular with both tourists and locals. There’s also an on-site Pastelaria on the ground floor serving fresh pasties de nata, coffee, and teas. For a mid-day snack, the Mezzanine Bar offers an all-day menu and cocktails.
The hotel’s central location between Chiado and Bairro Alto is arguably its best feature. The surrounding area is filled with hidden nooks featuring charming shops, cafes, and boutiques. All major tourist attractions are also nearby. These two neighborhoods are among Lisbon’s trendiest, making them great spots for both first-time and returning visitors.
