"Perfect Summer Vacation: Boutique Hotels in Hudson Valley with Ideal Swimming Pools"

When the warmer weather rolls around, vacation is on the top of everyone’s summer bucket list. From week-long stays to weekend getaways, you’ll want to make sure that you can cool down and go for a swim wherever you end up this season. Although there are plenty of swimming holes and lakes in the Hudson Valley to explore, these local boutique hotels offer pools onsite so you don’t have to sweat the small stuff (literally) when booking your summer travels.

Glenmere Mansion Hotel

At this 1911 Chester estate-turned-hotel, you’ll find Italian-inspired architecture, magnificent views of Glenmere Lake, and incomparably manicured gardens. Also located within the hotel’s 150 acres is an outdoor heated swimming pool that’s perfect for lounging out. While you enjoy your stay, make sure to take advantage of the nearby golf courses, onsite tennis courts, and the 8,000-square-foot spa.

Hasbrouck House

Stone Ridge

Another historic site that has transformed into a unique inn, Hasbrouck House is a retreat centered around an 18th-century Dutch Colonial stone mansion in Ulster County. A modern luxury escape, the property has it all, from its farm-to-table restaurant to its four historic buildings. When you stay here, get a few laps in at the hotel’s 100-year-old landmark pool that has its own outdoor burger and bar shack that’s open for the summer months.

Hotel Lilien

Don’t overlook this 18-room boutique hotel in the tiny town of Tannersville in Greene County. Located a stone’s throw from Hunter Mountain, Hotel Lilien is a place where cozy meets adventure in the Catskill Mountains. Spend an afternoon on the hiking trails, then make sure to hit the pool for relaxation on a padded poolside lounger.

A true all-in-one destination, Inness is an award-winning hotel in Accord that offers something for every type of guest. Book your summer getaway here to explore 220 pastoral acres of property, golf at the onsite nine-hole golf course, swing the racket around on the tennis courts, or hit the spa or gym to focus on wellness. The pools are a destination of their own, each filled with saltwater, surrounded by lounge chairs and umbrellas, and complete with a pool bar.

The Maker

Even when you’re not staying at The Maker, the Columbia County hotel is still a hotspot for dining or happy hours. But when you do book a stay, the retreat has so much more to offer to guests, from a perfume library to a renovated gym to complimentary parking. Spend your summer days at the outdoor heated pool and order waterside drinks to celebrate in style.

Riedlbauer’s Resort

Round Top

This German-American resort is fun for the whole family in Round Top. With 48 guest rooms and a surplus of German-inspired meals included in your stay, it’s hard not to book a vacation at Riedlbauer’s. Although the hotel has year-round attractions like mountain biking trails, an indoor pool and spa, and nightly entertainment, the summer months bring with them a whole new set of fun experiences. Hop in the outdoor pool when the weather is warm or sink into the 12-seater hot tub when it’s not.

Scribner’s Lodge

Founded with the intention of welcoming a new generation of urban explorers to the beautiful Catskills, Scribner’s Lodge is a bespoke mountain retreat. The property has 38 rooms to browse in the lodge, with an additional 11 luxury cabins located adjacent to the main building for the whole family to enjoy. Open seasonally, the pool invites hotel guests to sunbathe or swim with a 270-degree view of the Catskill Mountains in the background.

A Dutchess County estate, Troutbeck offers 250 acres of secluded land in Amenia. This is certainly the place to stay for the outdoorsy type, with tennis courts, fishing, hiking, and nearby river rafting. In the summer, the newly renovated, mid-century, outdoor pool with a grill and bar is the perfect afternoon lounge spot. Enjoy poolside bites like lobster rolls, barbecue pork sandwiches, salads, and drinks.

An organic market and café, interior gardens, and dining at Valley Rock Cantina or Lodge are a few of the hotel’s amenities. A year-round pool is the highlight of the grounds, surrounded by stunning greenery and luxurious loungers.

“Ocean City Hotels and Motels Partner with Police and Beach Patrol to Launch ‘Find-a-Kid’ Program Using Wristbands”

"Ocean City Hotels and Motels Partner with Police and Beach Patrol to Launch 'Find-a-Kid' Program Using Wristbands"

OCEAN CITY, Md. — Ocean City hotels and motels are offering a new program to help families with young children.

Guests can get a wrist band with individual information about the hotel/motel, so if a child gets lost, police or other officials can help reunite them with their family.

The hotels and motels are partnering with Ocean City police and Ocean City Beach Patrol on the initiative.

Police spokesperson Ashley Miller said lost children are “a common problem,” with kids getting separated either on the beach or on the busy Boardwalk.

“A lot of our younger kids don’t know mom’s name, dad’s name or phone number yet,” she said, noting the Ocean City Hotel-Motel-Restaurant Association pitched the idea, and that Virginia Beach has something similar.

“Minor Hotels CEO Plans Ambitious Expansion to Fill Portfolio Gaps through Mergers, Acquisitions, and Owner-Centric Approach”

"Minor Hotels CEO Plans Ambitious Expansion to Fill Portfolio Gaps through Mergers, Acquisitions, and Owner-Centric Approach"

Minor International runs 540 hotels and aims to grow that count about a third by 2026.

“In the next three years, our strategy is about expanding horizons,” said Minor International and Minor Hotels CEO Dillip Rajakarier. “We have a target of adding 200-plus properties in different geographies, particularly in India. We plan about 40 in Northern Europe.”

Skift spoke with Rajakarier to learn more.

Growth Strategy

Minor, the world’s 10th-largest hotel group and headquartered in Bangkok, has been introducing its European brands like NH Hotels into Asia.

  • “Our [$2.9 billion] acquisition of NH, a Dutch brand, in 2018 is a fantastic model,” the CEO said. “We took a niche European brand and have since brought it to Asia Pacific, where it’s popular. We’re bringing it to the Middle East and beyond.”

  • Globally, Minor Hotels has been shifting its mix toward upscale and luxury brands in the past few years. Last week, its luxury properties won 22 accolades at the Travel + Leisure Luxury Awards Asia Pacific 2024.

Mergers and Acquisitions

Minor Hotels is open to opportunistic acquisitions that align with its strategic goals, the CEO said.

  • “Wherever we might find a hole in the marketplace and our portfolio, we would try and fill the gap,” Rajakarier said.

  • “In India, there is a big hole in our portfolio,” he said. “We need to get more hotels there. The U.S. is another gap.”

  • “To be honest, we don’t have anything solid for me to say to you,” Rajakarier said. “We’re exploring a few options. … Of course, we’ve talked to many owners in different geographies about our expansion plan, not just India. When you look at the history of Minor, we’ve always been very opportunistic in terms of all acquisitions we’ve done.”

Is Minor open to acquiring a portfolio that may include real estate assets and not just brands?

Owner-Centric Approach

  • Local adaptation of brands is a key way the company tries to compete in appealing to hotel investors and owners. “We’re more flexible on brand standards than the major hotel groups and our teams are more responsive,” he said.

  • The CEO said his hotel group stands out in the market by providing a holistic solution to owners and managing all aspects of operations, including food and beverage, wellness, and residential. He claimed his company avoids cost-cutting that compromises guest experience, instead focusing on top-line growth and quality of earnings.

  • Medical and wellness tourism are themes the company feels especially talented at handling. This month, Minor Hotels announced Layan Life by Anantara, a new concept “blending modern medical technologies with ancient Thai healing traditions.” A newly built facility at its Anantara Layan Phuket Resort will open later this year in Thailand.

  • “Our focus has always been driving top-line revenue and high-quality earnings that flow to the bottom line regarding owner profit,” Rajakarier said. “We want to be the most profitable hotel brand in the world which gives you the best guest experience.”

“How Boutique Hotels such as The Standard Achieve Success with Retail: An Insight into Hotel Retail Experiences and Curated Items”

"How Boutique Hotels such as The Standard Achieve Success with Retail: An Insight into Hotel Retail Experiences and Curated Items"

Hotels present an interesting avenue for retail experiences, and brands are taking note.

If you ask Jeena Sharma, Luxury Reporter for Morning Brew, boutique or luxury hotels with an on-site or online shop (or both) can be an important part of building out a memorable luxury experience.

“What makes a hotel stay memorable or unique? It’s the little touches: the luxurious bathrobes, comfortable bedding, unique artwork, the scent in the lobby, the beautiful cutlery, etc.,” Sharma said.

“If the guest has the opportunity to take a piece of it home, it’s an opportunity for the hotel to build a long-lasting relationship with the customer.”

Boutique hotel groups like The Standard were early to this trend, launching The Standard Shop, the brand’s on-site and e-commerce retail arm, in 2008.

Often referred to simply as “The Shop”, this retail arm was a response to guest requests to be able to take a piece of their stay home—including requests to purchase in-room products such as bedding, bath items, and robes.

In general, The Shops offer a mix of drugstore basics as well as unique items made by local artisans and emerging international brands, along with a rotation of pop-up shops and brands-in-residence throughout the year. Past residencies include brands like éliou, Sabah, Shopbop, and others.

These retail experiences have expanded since 2008, and now offer hotel guests and visitors a selection of curated items that strive to embody the experiences and products offered by The Standard Hotels’ various locations.

As part of this expanded product mix, The Standard Shops also focus on offering exclusive, limited edition branded merchandise like its “Privacy Please” hoodies, which sell through quickly.

The latest iteration of this strategy includes the Jet Set collection, which is inspired by The Standard’s 25th anniversary this year and celebrates the brand’s globetrotting patrons with travel essentials like branded clothing and travel bags.

Aside from this, each site has it’s own location-specific offerings as well. At the Miami Beach location, for example, guests visiting The Shop will find a mix of products designed for outdoor activities, with products ranging from bikinis and bronzers to boardshorts.

This is good news for DTC brands like Vacation®, who’ve partnered with The Standard to have their sunscreen products featured both in-store and in-room as items available for purchase.

Along with helping the brand get in front of new audiences, it’s a highly relevant product for many guests staying on-site at The Standard’s locations like Miami Beach where the expansive pool area is a highlight of the property.

This particular partnership was born from an event-based activation The Standard Miami hosted in collaboration with Vacation®’s sister brand Poolsuite during Art Basel.

According to Vacation® Founding Partner Marty Bell, having their sunscreen available in-room at The Standard has not only boosted product sales, but also led to tastemakers and celebrities creating valuable social content featuring Vacation® products during their stay at the Miami Beach hotel.

“The Standard Miami is undoubtedly an epicenter for SPF tastemakers and have worked closely with their team on various activations–like gifting product to their swim club members and hosting a pop-up shop during Swim Week,” Bell said.

Other DTC brand partnerships found in The Shop include items like the Private Hours candle, which was created in collaboration with fragrance brand Snif.

Together, the two brands worked to craft a custom scent that aims to encapsulate the spirit of The Standard, High Line location so that hotel guests can take home an item that reminds them of their stay.

“Snif was thrilled to partner with a brand as iconic as The Standard,” said Marilyn Zubak, Director of Customer Acquisition & Partnerships at Snif. “Selling Private Hours on our DTC site and within The Standard Shop allowed us to combine our synergistic audiences, boosting sales and awareness for our brands.”

Both the hotel and the brands it partners with in a retail capacity benefit from these collaborations, and moving forward, it’s likely we’ll see more of these partnerships within the hospitality space.
