Tucked away in the rolling greenery of the Peak District, a scenic stroll from the grandeur of Chatsworth House—often hailed as Britain’s most beautiful stately home—lies a newly revitalized coaching inn. Owned by the Devonshire family, custodians of the Chatsworth estate, this historic property has undergone a stylish transformation.
Interior designer Nicola Harding, known for her work at Beaverbrook, collaborated with Laura Burlington, a current member of the estate’s family, to breathe new life into the inn. The result is a tasteful blend of heritage and modern comfort. Original artworks from the Chatsworth collection adorn the walls, including pieces by American portraitist Elizabeth Peyton and Turner Prize-winning artist Jeremy Deller.
Each of the 28 rooms and suites offers serene views of the surrounding countryside, framed by classic sash windows. Inside, the decor exudes understated elegance—coral pink corduroy armchairs, plush feather-filled cushions, block-printed wallpapers, and botanical prints create a cozy yet refined atmosphere. Details like emerald green felt-covered doors and creamy white ceilings add to the charm.
The Gallery Restaurant, painted in a soft eau-de-nil hue, showcases estate sketches, gilt-framed etchings, and landscape paintings—including two by Irish artist Oliver Comerford. It’s a fitting backdrop for executive chef Adam Harper’s elevated British menu, featuring dishes such as oysters, mackerel parfait, shellfish bisque, ham hock, and the classic beef Wellington.
For a more casual experience, the Garden Room offers a relaxed setting with pink and magenta tones, rattan furniture, and brick flooring. Its terrace is ideal for enjoying brunch favorites like garden-fresh soups, prawn cocktails, English asparagus, and hearty farm roasts.
Much of the menu is sourced directly from the estate’s own beehives, mushroom houses, kitchen gardens, and game, as well as from local producers within a 10-mile radius—ensuring a true taste of the Peak District.
