Steve Carell recently opened up about his admiration for Taylor Swift during his appearance on The Tonight Show With Jimmy Fallon. On the June 10 episode, Carell shared his initial encounter with Swift and the moment that solidified his fandom.
The actor recalled their first meeting on Total Request Live, the popular MTV music video countdown show. “Briefly, I met TS. Remember TRL way back? Early on in my career and in hers, we were both on TRL at the same time,” Carell told Fallon. He added, “I thought, boy, she seems special, like even back then. She was very sweet and very nice, just had a really nice first impression.”
Although their interaction was brief, Carell shared a moment that made him realize Swift’s genuine kindness. “And then years later, obviously following her career, she became a big superstar,” The Office alum said. He continued, “I remember seeing some video of her at a hospital, playing an acoustic guitar for a patient there. Some kid. It was no big crew, it was like a really low-key handheld thing that she sort of just did on the sly. And I thought, “That’s so cool and not publicized and just leading with her heart. And I thought, ‘Okay, yeah, I’m a fan.'”
After sharing his heartfelt story about Swift, Fallon commented that Carell is also a very nice guy, to which Carell responded, “No, no, no. Not Taylor Swift level.”
This isn’t the first time Carell has publicly praised the pop star. In a 2014 interview with ABC News, he sang the lyrics from “Shake it Off” and expressed his love for Swift.
