HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) – On Thursday, 5,000 unionized hotel workers in Waikiki voted to authorize a strike at seven hotels, as reported by members of Unite Here Local 5.
After months of negotiations, union members expressed frustration over being ignored by offshore hotel owners and mainland operators.
The workers are demanding raises that align with inflation, Hawaii’s high cost of living, safer workloads, and adequate staffing.
The strike authorization targets the Hilton Hawaiian Village, the Hyatt, Moana Surfrider, The Royal Hawaiian, Sheraton Kaiulani, Sheraton Waikiki, and the Marriott.
Unite Here Local 5 highlighted that workers have not received a raise in two years despite rising inflation and are seeking improved staffing conditions.
“I am ready to strike for wages that allow me to take care of my family and proper staffing that allows me to take care of guests,” said Rachel Santos, a hostess at the Moana Surfrider – a Westin Resort Spa. “I love my job, and I love my family, so I’ll do whatever it takes to protect them both.”
A recent survey of nearly 4,000 Local 5 workers revealed that 76% couldn’t afford an unexpected $500 expense.
Additionally, 78% of workers believe their employers exploited the pandemic to reduce payroll and implement unfavorable changes.
